Kolkata sizzles at 39°C, heatwave to continue till April 19

The scorching heatwave continues to grip Kolkata, with temperatures expected to reach a maximum of around 39 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, making it a hot and uncomfortable day for residents.

Monday marked the 2nd hottest day of the season in a row, with the city sizzling at nearly 39 degrees Celsius. Forecasts suggest that temperatures may soar even higher, possibly reaching 42 degrees by the upcoming weekend.

In stark contrast, Churu in the Thar desert region, known for its extreme heat, recorded a maximum temperature of around 33 degrees on Monday.

The Meteorological Department in Calcutta reported a maximum temperature of 38.7 degrees Celsius, three notches above normal, in Alipore. The surrounding districts experienced even hotter conditions.

Heatwave conditions are anticipated in several districts of South Bengal, including Purba and Paschim Midnapore, Jhargram, South 24 Parganas, Purulia, Bankura, Purba and Paschim Burdwan, on both Wednesday and Thursday.

To stay safe during this heatwave, the weather office has advised people to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities between 11 am and 4 pm and ensure they stay well-hydrated.
